Not every product in a Shopify store needs the same explanation. A simple accessory needs different information from a device with connection requirements or a product chosen for its appearance. Templates per product family can show these differences. The challenge is to offer enough distinction without maintaining a separate template for almost every item.<\/p>\n

Group by information needs<\/h2>\n

Start with the questions customers need to answer before purchasing. For a lamp, these might be application, lighting effect and dimensions. For a replacement part, compatibility and recognition matter more. Products belong in the same template family when their decision questions and information order sufficiently match. That need not exactly follow commercial categories.<\/p>\n

Consider a fictional home-working store. A desk chair needs seating information and adjustment options; a monitor arm needs load capacity and connection details. Both may sit in the workspace category but need different explanation structures. One template containing every possible section may leave many empty or unclear parts. Two focused families are likely easier to understand.<\/p>\n

Keep product data out of fixed example text<\/h2>\n

A template determines structure, while product data supplies the specific content. The Shopify documentation on templates<\/a> states that changes affect every page using that template. Do not put a product-specific promise as fixed text in a shared component. One change could otherwise misdescribe several items unintentionally.<\/p>\n

For each family, list mandatory, optional and unsuitable information. A connection drawing may be mandatory for monitor arms while a lifestyle image is optional. These agreements help with entering new products. Editors then need not repeatedly guess whether a missing field is deliberate or makes the product page incomplete.<\/p>\n

Limit exceptions through a deliberate trial<\/h2>\n

For every exception, distinguish different information from a different structure. A chair with one extra property may need only an additional field. A product requiring compatibility to be established first may need a fundamentally different sequence. This prevents every content difference from automatically becoming a new template needing separate checks later.<\/p>\n

Test each proposed template with at least three varied family members. Include a product with little information and one requiring extensive explanation. If almost every item needs a separate section order, the family is too broad. If differences mainly concern text and images, you probably do not need another template.<\/p>\n

On mobile, check whether the main distinction appears early enough. A product selected for compatibility should not show that information only after a long brand story. Have someone use the page to solve a real selection problem. This assesses whether its structure communicates knowledge, not merely whether it looks tidy.<\/p>\n

Make assignment part of product management<\/h2>\n

Give templates clear names and describe when to choose them. \u201cDevice product family\u201d is clearer than \u201cproduct-v3-final\u201d. When adding an item, include a short check: correct family, required data present and preview reviewed. Include an example of a product that does not fit the family too.<\/p>\n
