Navigating a website using only the keyboard reveals usability problems easily hidden by mouse use. Examples include a menu that opens only on hover or a window you cannot leave. A short check is not a complete accessibility assessment, but provides concrete improvements for the most important visitor tasks.<\/p>\n

Choose a journey and record the starting situation<\/h2>\n

Start on a representative page and complete a task, such as finding a service and filling in an enquiry. Use Tab to move to the next interactive element and Shift plus Tab to move back. Operate links and buttons with the keys appropriate to each element. Record your browser and device so a developer can reproduce the behaviour.<\/p>\n

Always check where focus is: the element currently receiving keyboard input. That position must remain perceptible. Also check that the order fits the content. If visitors suddenly land in a hidden element after a form, the page can become hard to follow.<\/p>\n

Pay particular attention to menus and windows<\/h2>\n

A fictional business website uses a dropdown service menu. Its links appear immediately with a mouse, but keyboard users can reach only the parent page. Record exactly which service link is missing from the journey. That is more useful than merely reporting that the menu is inaccessible.<\/p>\n

Also open any search windows and dialogs. Check that you can operate their contents and close the window. See where focus returns afterwards. Visitors must be able to continue their original task. The W3C guide to page structure<\/a> also explains why meaningful regions and headings support orientation and navigation.<\/p>\n

Test forms with recoverable errors<\/h2>\n

Complete a form only partly at first. Check that labels are recognisable, dropdowns remain operable and the submit button is reachable. Deliberately leave a required field empty. Can you identify the error and continue without retyping everything? Assess the entire action, including an imperfect first attempt.<\/p>\n

A design for websites and online stores<\/a> must include these states too. An attractive view prefilled with sample data reveals little about error handling. At acceptance, ask for a working journey with real interaction, not just screenshots.<\/p>\n

Check the journey backwards too. An element reachable forwards may unexpectedly be skipped when moving back. Watch hidden menu items: they must not take visitors into content that remains visually closed. Describe these observations separately so the developer can investigate the menu's specific state.<\/p>\n

Make findings actionable<\/h2>\n

Use four parts for each problem: the page, key sequence used, observed behaviour and expected result. Where possible, include a short screen recording without real customer data. State whether the task becomes impossible or merely unnecessarily cumbersome. The team can then prioritise by impact.<\/p>\n

After a fix, repeat the same journey and check adjacent elements. A menu change can affect focus order elsewhere too. Maintain the task set for future releases and, where needed, plan a broader review with specialists and users. An initial discussion of the findings<\/a> becomes concrete when the obstacles are reproducible.
