Defaults in a kit configurator can help customers get started, but also influence their decision. A preselected component therefore needs a substantive reason. Decide which application it suits and when someone should change it. A good default makes the journey clearer without hiding the possibility that the customer's situation differs.<\/p>\n

Justify the default with an application<\/h2>\n

Ask why a particular component is the default. Is it necessary for the selected base? Does it suit the most explicitly described application? Or is it mainly a commercially desirable addition? These reasons differ. A required connection may need a different presentation from an optional convenience component. Customers must understand what the selection means.<\/p>\n

In a fictional home recording kit shop, a simple desk stand is preselected. This may be suitable when the journey is clearly intended for a fixed desk position. Someone working standing up may need another mounting solution. Connect the default to that assumed application; otherwise it appears suitable for everyone opening the configurator.<\/p>\n

Document the rationale for product management. When a new product family is added, the team must be able to assess whether the same default still makes sense. Also test a scenario where the default is unsuitable. Can users recognise that they need to change it? If that difference is hard to see, improve the explanation or reconsider the default selection. A default's quality is particularly apparent when someone with different needs can deliberately depart from it.<\/p>\n
