A product that will not return requires more than disabling the order button. Customers may follow an old link to find specifications, a manual or a suitable alternative. Decide which task the product page still serves and how that task will be taken over. A clear transition prevents a discontinued item from becoming a confusing dead end.<\/p>\n

Distinguish temporary from permanent<\/h2>\n

A temporarily out-of-stock product remains part of the range. A discontinued product has a different future. Avoid using those states interchangeably, because they create different expectations. A customer waiting for new stock should not actually be waiting for an item that will never be supplied again.<\/p>\n

Have the product owner confirm which situation applies. Sometimes only a specific variation is discontinued. The product family remains relevant, but the choices and explanation need updating. Also check images and descriptions that still prominently show the discontinued variation.<\/p>\n

Decide what the existing page should keep doing<\/h2>\n

In a fictional store, a desk lamp is replaced by a new model. Customers with the old model still look for dimensions and a manual. A clear old product page with its status and a link to the successor can help. The new page does not need to take over all the historical information.<\/p>\n

A successor is not automatically equivalent. Explain relevant differences that affect the choice. If no direct replacement exists, linking to a suitable category or advice route is more honest than presenting an arbitrary product as a replacement.<\/p>\n

For an online store with a changing range<\/a> this deserves a consistent content pattern: no longer available, a possible successor and information that remains relevant. The technical setup must match the chosen visibility and ordering availability.<\/p>\n

Check links and recommendations<\/h2>\n

Review category pages, related recommendations, campaign pages and internal links. A discontinued item may still appear there as a current choice. Also check instructions and service responses that mention it. The transition often affects more places than the product itself.<\/p>\n

A change in the current catalogue must not leave employees uncertain about which product a customer previously bought. Account for product references, historical information and any external systems.
