A variable product can look straightforward while many combinations sit behind its dropdowns. Not every combination actually exists, and not every existing variation can be ordered immediately. A variation matrix shows which combinations the store needs to support and which data is required for each. Use it before products go live.<\/p>\n

Describe the variations you actually sell<\/h2>\n

Start with a list of existing combinations, such as model, colour and length<\/a>. Have the product owner confirm which variations are actually supplied. Avoid automatically generating every imaginable combination just because the administration screen allows it. A product that does not exist differs from a variation that is temporarily out of stock.<\/p>\n

According to the WooCommerce documentation on variable products<\/a> variations can have their own data, including price, SKU, stock and image. The matrix helps determine which information differs by variation. The technology provides the fields; the catalogue determines their meaning.<\/p>\n

Make missing data visible<\/h2>\n

In a fictional store, a worktable comes in two heights and three widths, but the narrowest version is available in only one height. The matrix therefore does not automatically contain six sellable combinations. Price, code and presentation are checked for every existing variation. A missing image must not silently show the wrong variation.<\/p>\n

Add a column for review status. \u201cData still to be supplied\u201d is not an ordering status for the customer. Keep internal preparation separate from public availability. The team can then fill in missing information without an incomplete product accidentally becoming available to buy.<\/p>\n

Also show where important data comes from. If price or stock comes from another system, the correct variation must be identified. For an integration between WooCommerce and AFAS<\/a> an unambiguous product relationship is therefore an important preparatory step.<\/p>\n

Test choices from the product page<\/h2>\n

Walk through both common and unusual combinations. Do not always begin in the same order. A customer may choose a colour before a size, or the other way round. Check what happens when someone changes an earlier choice. The visible name, price and image must match the final selection.<\/p>\n

Add a selected variation to the basket and ask another employee to read the line. Can they determine exactly which variation is intended? Then check the test order. A clear product card is insufficient if its meaning disappears later in the order information.<\/p>\n

Pay particular attention to the initial selection on the product page. If a variation is already selected, the customer must be able to recognise it. A default choice is not automatically the most suitable variation for every application. Let the product owner decide whether preselection fits, and check that the image, text and order line consistently show that choice.<\/p>\n

Use the matrix when making changes<\/h2>\n

A new colour or discontinued size affects existing combinations. Update the matrix before an employee adds or removes variations in administration. Consider what the change means for product copy, photos and any recommendations. Test at least one existing variation alongside the new situation.<\/p>\n

The matrix does not need to become a second stock administration system. Its main purpose is to record which combinations actually exist and which checks are required to present and order them correctly.
