The product type in WooCommerce determines more than the input fields in the admin area. The choice affects what a customer selects, which data is maintained for each variant and how staff manage the range. Start with the item being sold and the purchasing decision. Then choose the technical structure that fits.<\/p>\n

First describe what the customer is actually buying<\/h2>\n

For a representative item, note whether there is one version, several variants or several separate items displayed together. Also ask whether shipping is required and whether a file is supplied. A simple product suits one standalone item with no variations to choose from. A variable product suits a situation where the customer chooses a variant within the same product, for example. These are different purchasing journeys, not interchangeable ways to fill the same screen.<\/p>\n

Look at differences that matter operationally<\/h2>\n

A fictional shop sells a work light in two power ratings. Each variant has its own item code and stock. The team needs to recognise these differences when processing orders and managing products. Simply putting two names in a free-text choice would not make the relationship with the variant being sold clear enough.<\/p>\n

Another shop displays a desk with matching separate accessories. If each item is selected and sold individually, presenting them together may make sense without implying that they are sold as one combined offering. Also test a later change: a new variant, a missing image or an item temporarily unavailable to order. Assess whether management remains clear. Document the chosen rules with examples so that future products follow the same meaning.
